Foxboro goalie Melissa Almeida blanked the Bombardiers through the final two periods.

Her counterpart, Attleboro's Andrew Campion, blanked the Warriors not only during the first and third periods, but on a half-dozen power-play chances as well.

And so it was that two teams, starving for wins, scrounging for their first Hockomock League victory of the season, settled for a 1-1 tie Monday at the Aleixo Arena, thanks largely to their sophomore goaltenders.

"Melissa has been outstanding," said Foxboro High coach Jim Genovese of Almeida, turning back six shots in each of the second and third periods, 16 overall, as the Warriors secured a point to improve to 3-4-2 overall, 0-3 in the Hockomock League's Davenport Division.

In the other net, Campion not only turned aside 11 Foxboro shots in the third period and 23 overall, but foiled three power-play chances as the Warriors won seven of eight faceoffs in the attacking zone.

Attleboro's Zack Dragun put the Bombardiers ahead at 10:01 of the first period, stuffing a short side right shot over Almeida's glove.

Senior captain Aiden Campbell netted the equalizer for Foxboro at 6:21 of the second period, firing a wrist shot through a scrum of players from the right faceoff circle, with fellow senior captain Greg Stamatov assisting.

The Bombardiers dominated the first period (allowing just two shots, just two faceoffs in the attacking zone) as much as the Warriors owned the second period (11 shots, 10 faceoffs in the attacking zone).

But, time and again Almeida and Campion stood in the way.

Campion denied Foxboro's Shawn Delaney on a solo breakaway bid within the first minute of the second period, three power-play chances, while being saved by the post on a drive by Campbell from the left point on the Warriors' third man-advantage with less than two minutes left.

Almeida stonewalled the Bombardiers' Nick Martini on a shot in the slot in the 12th minute of the second period, single AHS power-play chances in the first and third periods and a partial breakaway by Dragun on a shorthanded situation with just under five minutes left to preserve the tie.

"In the first period we didn't play well, we didn't have our jump," added Genovese, the Warriors without three regular skaters (Nick Dowling, Kyle Sperzel and Owen Campbell) due to injury. The Warriors survived a late surge by AHS over the final seven minutes too.

The Bombardiers struggled at times with chances to score, creating just one shot at Almeida during their late first period power play and failing to put up a shot at her during another man-up chance midway through the third period.

Foxboro was up and down as well, but generated chances in the heart of the contest.

"We woke up in the second period, we were creating chances," added Genovese. "Their goalie (Campion) played outstanding. We were getting good bids. On the power-play, we were getting shots, but maybe not the right decisions - I would have liked to scored one or two power-play goals, I would have liked to get a win."

Foxboro was scheduled to return to the ice at the Foxboro Sports Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against King Philip.

- Mansfield played all of its Hornets in a 3-0 Hockomock League win over Foxboro on Saturday

The Hornets dominated in shots on net, putting 33 on the goalie Almeida, who dutifully turned aside 30.

Erik Foley and Shane Pioti netted the first two goals for Mansfield. With the game still in reach in the third, Foxboro pulled Almeida, but that effort went for naught, as Jason Collins netted an unassisted empty-netter to close the scoring.

Christian Debeauport stopped all 12 shots for the shutout in net for Mansfield.

- The Bulldogs of Canton easily prevailed over Foxboro's Warriors, 10-1 last Wednesday. Stamatov was responsible for the lone goal, a power-play tally in the third period of the Hockomock League tilt. Kept busy all night, Almeida turned aside 28 shots, but the Canton offense was too much for the Warriors to match.

TAUNTON - Senior Greg Stamatov's second goal of the game, on a power play at 6:58 of the third period, pulled the unbeaten Warriors into a tie with Southeastern Regional in a non-league game.

Foxboro (3-0-1) took a 1-0, first-period lead and owned a three-goal advantage midway through the second period.

"We thought that we'd walk all over them, we didn't play well defensively," said Warrior coach Jim Genovese, as Southeastern knotted the score with a trio of second-period goals, then took the lead early in the third period.

Aiden Campbell and Owen Campbell - both with two assists for Foxboro - helped set up Stamatov's tying goal.

The Warriors scored three power-play goals in the tilt, while goalie Melissa Almeida totaled 15 saves.

Mike McGuire put Foxboro in front in the first period with a goal just 1:42 into the contest, with Owen Campbell assisting on the power-play chance. Stamatov (another power play) and Nick Dowling netted second-period goals for the Warriors.

HOCKEY: Foxboro, Mansfield unbeaten

FRANKLIN - Greg Stamatov and Owen Campbell both had hat tricks to fuel the Foxboro High hockey team's 8-5, non-league victory over Tri-County Regional Wednesday night.

Stamatov also added an assist. The Warriors (3-0) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead only to see T-C pull even at 2-all later in the first. However, Foxboro made it 5-2 after the first period and Tri-County could get no closer than 5-4 in the third.

For the Cougars (1-4), Sam Greengus and Chad Nadeau both had a goal and assist while Owen Hilton had two helpers. Jack Reggio, Tyler Lobisser and Collin Spillane had the other three Tri-County goals while David Cauley played well between the pipes, coming in after Foxboro already have five goals on the board.

Foxboro High coach Jim Genovese begins the season with two of the best players in the Hockomock League. If and when the depth gains some experience, that could make the Warriors into one pesky team as they look to improve upon last season's five wins.

Senior defenseman Aiden Campbell (one goal, six assists last year) is the heart of the blue line corps, while up front, feisty senior Greg Stamatov (13 goals, 16 assists as the No. 1 scorer last season) brings the leadership and skill sets from the football and lacrosse teams. Those two serve as captains for the upcoming season, important positions for a team continuing to establish its profile on the ice.

If nothing else, Stamatov feels like the team is starting off on the right skate.

"We got off to a much better start this year," the senior captain said. "We're just looking a lot crisper and have a lot more flow to our practices. Both of those things are important when you're on the ice."

"The second half of last season we played much better, this could be an exciting year," said Genovese, who had just two dozen candidates for the team. Juniors Mike Maguire and Scott MacDonald will be two of the fixtures on the defense in front of sophomore goalie Melissa Almeida, a major reason for Foxboro's improvement during late January and February. Adam Aldrich will serve as a backup to Almeida in net.

Said Stamatov of Aiden Campbell, Mike Maguire and Scott MacDonald: "That sounds like a pretty fool-proof defense if you ask me."

Stamatov will likely center senior Nick Dowling, who was sidelined with a concussion last year, and sophomore Owen Campbell, a trio which has the potential for plenty of points. Stamatov praised the hands and offensive abilities of Dowling, while Campbell played beyond his years as a freshman last year.

Freshman Nick Luciano has flashed some skills in practice and could be a useful addition to Genovese's Warriors by season's end. "He has a lot of natural talent," said Stamatov. "He's working into the system well and figuring it out.

A second line has junior Sean Delaney centering senior Dylan Sawyer-Griffith and junior Paul Campbell. "We scrimmaged Dover-Sherborn, I've been very encouraged," added Genovese.

With those positive returns, Genovese is counting on his Warriors to take the next step developmentally, challenging his Warriors with more intricate schemes.

"We have a little more of a complex system," said Stamatov, who hopes the team can stretch its wings on the power play. "We're making advancements you'd expect after a year of building. You just got to open everything up a little bit."

Warriors win 2nd straight

FOXBORO - For two months of the season, the Foxboro High hockey team knew mostly frustration. The Warriors slapped sticks on the ice in anger, uttered an unpleasant word or two on the long walk to the locker room and went back onto the ice early the next morning for more seasoning. All the while, coach Jim Genovese preached patience and hard work with his underclassmen-laden team.

After going 1-13 through 15 games, Foxboro's found a little bit of lightning in a bottle, winning its second straight contest, 3-1 over Minuteman Tech on Senior Night. The win keeps Foxboro in the MIAA Tournament hunt as the team improved to 2-4 against Division 3 or lower opponents with two games remaining.

Though it was Senior Night, it was a freshman who had his fingerprints on the win. Forward Owen Campbell acquired a point on all three Foxboro goals, the first of which came off his stick, a power-play goal fed from Greg Stamatov behind the net at 6:44 of the first period.

Campbell was also key on Foxboro's second tally, blasting a shot off goaltender Cody Lusk with senior captain T.J. Notarangelo taking care of the carom from about three feet out, punishing the Mustangs for allowing a 5-on-3 man advantage.

Power plays were a theme for Foxboro (3-13), as the Mustangs committed 13 penalties on the night, one more than their total shots on net (12). Those penalties piled up at the beginning of the season period, with Minuteman being assessed four penalties in a 1:43 stretch, several of them due to frustration. That gave Foxboro more time to practice its 5-on-3 offense than may even be allotted in practice.

Campbell scored again on one of those back-to-back 5-on-3's, pouncing on a rebound initially fired off the stick of his brother Aiden Campbell, a junior.

"They were leaving a lot of open ice," Owen said. "We just found the lanes. Aiden shot it from the point and got a nice rebound out in front. I was just right there to finish it."

Minuteman closed the gap on a power-play goal of its own, with Braedan Kerins roofing one six seconds into the man advantage. That's all the Mustangs offense could muster, as Foxboro controlled the puck throughout in the offensive zone, putting 42 shots on net.

If the Warriors defeat Minuteman again Wednesday and Blue Hills on Monday, they'll qualify for the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional under the Sullivan Rule.

"It's been going good the past couple games," said Owen Campbell. "We're starting to step it up, get it together and work as a team."

Foxboro 3, Mashpee/Upper Cape Tech 2 (as reported in Cape Cod Times, February 15, 2011)

FOXBORO — The Falcons payed an even, physical game with the Warriors but took two penalties in the second period that proved costly. With the game tied at one on goals by Foxboro's Owen Campbell and Mashpee/UCT's Tony Bartolomei in the first period, the Falcons went to the box twice in the second and Foxboro cashed in both times.Taylor Nickerson got one back for the Falcons (7-8-3) in the third at 10:54 on an unassisted strike but Warriors goalie Melissa Almedia held them off, making 35 saves — several of them key to the win.

FHS ROUNDUP: Icemen net first victory

Published: Thursday, February 10, 2011 10:01 AM EST

Saturday night it was a full-fledged effort as the Foxboro High hockey team added win No. 1 to the season's docket, claiming a 5-2 victory. Owen Campbell's two goals and two assists were huge as Foxboro avenged a 9-0 loss to Stoughton earlier in the year.

They all played well tonight," said coach Jim Genovese. "It was the first full 45-minute game that we put together and it paid off."

Foxboro battled for that first mark in the win column as the Black Knights took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but a beautiful cross-crease save by goalie Melissa Almeida in the second period started the momentum going in Foxboro's direction.

With 8:15 to go in the second, Owen Campbell netted his first goal off a backdoor pass from Greg Stamatov as he cut in on the net. Sean Delaney followed with the game-winning tally, his first varsity goal off a rebound. With 46 seconds to go in the second, Stamatov crashed the net to score one of his own.

Four minutes into the third period, Foxboro iced the contest on Campbell's second goal, a wrap-around tally set up by the forechecking of Stamatov.

- With a little extra fuel in the skates coming off their first win of the season, the Warriors glided to a strong start but yielded four answered goals as the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers took their first win, 4-1, at Foxboro Sports Center on Monday night.

The Warriors leapt to a 1-0 advantage, with freshman Conor Lynch scoring off a beautiful feed from Stamatov. Advancing past the North defense on a 2-on-1, Stamatov slid the puck to Lynch, who hammered it past the lateral-moving Mike Brooks in net at 11:07.

Stoughton High Hockey Falls to Previously Winless Foxborough (from Stoughton.patch.com)

The Black Knights had a 2-1 lead, but after losing two of their top players midway through the second period, Foxborough scored four unanswered goals the rest of the way to earn their first victory of the season.

Is the season beginning to unravel for the Stoughton High School boys’ hockey team?

After playing so well at the beginning of the season, King Philip crushed the Black Knights in their previous game, 10-1, and on Saturday night Stoughton lost to Foxborough at the Foxborough Sports Center, 5-2. Coming into the game, the Warriors had lost 29 consecutive contests, including a 9-2 defeat against Stoughton, just over three weeks ago.

“For the second straight game we didn’t show up to play and we now have put ourselves in a deep hole for any chance to qualify for the (post-season) tournament,” said Stoughton coach Dan Mark. “Foxborough deserves a lot of credit. They always battle and have never quit, and finally got a well-deserved win and I’m real happy for them.”

Foxborough coach Jim Genovese is in his fourth year at the helm of the Warriors. In his first season, Foxborough qualified for the post-season, but since then times have been tough. The Warriors endured a winless 0-20 season a year ago, and had an 0-9 start this season—it seemed that Foxborough would never get another win in the very competitive Hockomock League.

“The record and all those losses in a row didn’t show it, but we have a lot of talent,  we’re just really young,” said Genovese. “We’ve been getting closer and closer and better with every game and this win may surprise a lot of people, but not us.”

Foxborough has 16 freshmen and sophomores on its roster and needed a goaltender so desperately that the team summoned a young woman named Melissa Almeida only a few weeks ago to take over the net minding chores.

“I knew people and the other teams looked at first and thought it was a joke to play us with me in net, but no one is laughing now,” said Almeida, a freshman. “We have a good team and practice and play real hard and we finally got what we deserve. Now, we can’t be happy with just one win, we need to get more.”

Stoughton entered the game a little banged up and had to revamp its lines on several occasions during the game. The Black Knights jumped ahead with a goal, less than five minutes into the contest. Steve Leoffler, a senior, scored his third goal of the season, with an assist from junior Dan Swartz.

Foxborough tied the score on its first of two power play goals when a pair of freshman hooked up. Connor Lynch got the goal, on an assist from Owen Campbell (two goals and two assists), with just over six minutes left in the first period.

The game remained tied until the opening minute of the second period, when Stoughton retook the lead on a goal by sophomore Jacob Rohrer, his first tally of the season. Josh Potter, a junior defenseman, along with junior Connor Heffernan got the assists.

But Foxborough took advantage of Stoughton losing its top two players during the midpoint of the second period.

The Black Knights’ leading scorer, sophomore forward Phil Falkof, was assessed a game misconduct after a hit-from-behind penalty (Falkof will also miss the next two games) and senior forward Ricky Connaughton slammed feet first into the boards a minute later, and didn’t return, although he was able to skate off the ice. Stoughton played the rest of the way with only two lines and two sets of defensemen, and it took its toll.

Foxborough connected for three unanswered goals in the final eight minutes of the middle period. Campbell scored on a four-on-four to knot the score, 2-2, with an assist from junior Greg Stamatov (one goal and two assists). The Warriors took the lead on a power play goal by sophomore Shawn Delaney, his first score of the season, with an assist from junior Nick Dowling.

Stamatov scored in the final minute of the second period, on an assist by Campbell and sophomore Scott McDonald. Foxborough added the lone goal of the third period with Stamatov assisting Campbell for the score. The rest of the way, Foxborough relied on solid defense and great goaltending by Almeida (20 saves) to preserve the win.

“It was finally a good feeling walking into the locker room after a game and we hope this night serves as the turning point for this team to build upon,” said Genovese.

Both teams return to action on Monday, with Foxborough playing North Attleboro at the Foxborough Sports Center and Stoughton (3-7-1 overall, 2-4-1 in the league and 1-2-0 in the division) hosting Oliver Ames at 4:15 p.m. at the Asiaf Rink in Brockton.

“We will practice on Sunday and get ready for our next game and try to get better,” said Mark.

Stoughton needs to earn 13 points out of a possible 18 over its final nine games to earn a post-season berth.
