STARS TAKE U12 TITLE FOR 2ND YEAR IN A ROW

The Stars dominated the 12 and Under division, beating the Alberty U12 team 8-0 in the finals.  Quickness and passing allowed them to control the puck and keep the puck in their opponent's end for most of the tourney, allowing the Stars to rack up 3 shutouts in a row.

Earlier round games also saw some great action, especially the Alberty U12 vs. Team Burke in the semis.  Goalie Tyler Holske had the crowd going crazy with save after excellent save, keeping Alberty U12 off the board and Team Burke in the game.  Team Burke eventually lost in a shootout but not before showing the crowd the best goaltending in all age brackets.

The 3 quarter-final games saw Alberty U12 beat No Fear, 5-2, Red Dogs shut out the Flyers 4-0 and Team McCracken last to the Stars 5-0.  Team Burke had a bye in the first round (because they were the first to get their application in!)

Congratulations to Eric Robinson, Larry Bero, Derek Arnold, John Sperzel, Joe Lieneck, Sam Marrotta, Justin Harnett, Barrett Elliot and Brian Yanovitch of the Stars!

TEAM CARROLL WINS IN OVERTIME IN U15 THRILLER

Team Carroll scored during a 5-minute sudden death overtime, clinching the 15 and Under title by a score of 2-1 with a win over the Yellow Bombers.

After Team Carroll took care of White Titans and the Yellow Bombers beat the Alberty U15 team in the first round, Team Carroll and the Yellow Bombers gave a finals preview.

Their winners bracket game finished in  regulation time at 0-0.  During the ensuing shootout, Carroll won on its last shot sending them to the championship round.

The Yellow Bombers beat the Alberty U15 team in the championship play-in game, getting them in the championship but forcing them to play their 3rd game in a row.  But as Team Carroll found out, the Yellow Bombers still had some gas to push the final into OT.

Special mention goes to the Alberty U15 team, made up of mostly under 12 members of various 12 and Under division teams who competed against older competition, winning the losers bracket game against the White Titans.

Team Carroll was:  Patrick Carroll, Chris Corey, Zack Cantin, Brendan Carroll, Shawn Manning, Chris Braudis, Mike Colleran and Shane McDougall

PLAYAZ WIN THE U18 DIVISION

Playaz stomped Team Dietzel in the 18 and Under Division final, 6-0, a team Playaz had narrowly escaped in the winners bracket game in the first round.

Team Dietzel played hard, but playing their 3rd game in a row took its toll as the much fresher Playaz were able to get more forechecking on the Team Dietzel defense, creating more scoring chances.  They were also able to backcheck more forcing Team Dietzel to take more perimeter shots.  However, when they did goalie Craig Carew made some amazing saves to help the cause.

In the 1st round, the Playaz beat Team Fleck while Team Dietzel beat the Outlaws.  The Outlaws beat Team Fleck in the losers bracket, 6-1, only to fall to Team Dietzel in the championship play-in game.

Special recognition goes out to the Outlaws, a team of non-hockey players who impressed many with their hard play and good defense.

The Playaz were:  Joe Cotter, Jon Hixon, Brian Davis, Matt Treannie, Craig Carew and Chris Snyder.

TOURNEY WRAP-UP

Once again we had a great turnout for the tourney.  Fifteen teams and over 80 kids participated in front of a big Founder's Day crowd.  The weather was great, maybe a little hot, but a great time was had by all.

Things ran about 15-25 minutes behind for most of the day due to: players getting caught in parade traffic, taking time to present trophies and taking some extra time to allow players playing in the double elimination levels to rest and get some water.  I'll try to schedule for those things next year and then will cross my fingers!

I'd like to thank Denis Robichaud and Alex Zeuli for refereeing the games.  With some fast paced action and weather in the 80s (and the temperature was definitely higher out on the rink), these 2 guys had a lot to deal with and I thank them for volunteering their time!

If you have any suggestions for next year, no matter how small, please let me know.  Email me by clicking here.

Thanks again, Steve Waryas
